Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie is a Japanese OVA with 2 episodes released on VHS. It aired in February 1996. It was later converted to a movie. When the English dub was released in 1999, ADV Films was forced to censor the movie, however it was released uncensored and uncut in January 28, 2004 on DVD. Also, Saudi Arabia and Northeastern Europe have some additional censorship

When the movie aired on Film 4 and ITV2 in the UK, the movie had to be censored.

Censorship[]

USA censorship[]

(This censorship is used in Boomerang Australia too.)

  • The scene that shows Sonic giving Robotnik the finger was modified for the 1999 VHS release. In the 1999 VHS release it has been edited to make it appear, however it appears that Sonic was giving his index finger instead of his middle one. (This scene was brought back in the uncut 2004 DVD release.)
  • The scene that shows Robotnik groping Sara was cut. (This scene was brought back in the uncut 2004 DVD release.)
  • The scene where Dr. Robotnik says "They feel so nice." it was changed to "It was a accident!" (The original line was brought back in the uncut 2004 DVD release.)
  • The scene that shows Sara being pregnant and breastfeeds a baby Robotnik was cut. (This scene was brought back in the uncut 2004 DVD release.)
  • The scene where Sara calls Hyper Metal Sonic a "pervert" for him looking up at her dress and kicks him was cut. (This scene was brought back in the uncut 2004 DVD release.)
  • The scene that shows Tails holding Sara´s breasts was cut. (This scene was brought back in the uncut 2004 DVD release.)
  • The scene where Knuckles says "Tails!" was cut. (This line was brought back in the uncut 2004 DVD release.)
  • The scene where Tails says "Im so sorry!" was cut. (This line was brought back in the uncut 2004 DVD release.)

Arabic censorship[]

This version has the American censorship, except there was additional modification. When the snow effect is gone, it cuts to Knuckles saying "I've never thought you would stoop that low!". This version also has additional censorship.

  • The scene where Hyper Metal Sonic sacrifices himself and burns when he hits the lava was cut.

Northeastern Europe censorship[]

Nickelodeon[]

On Nickelodeon NEE broadcasts, the Arabic and American censored versions are both used, and one additional censor was made to Nickelodeon broadcasts. However on Cartoon Network NEE, Boomerang NEE and The History Channel NEE, the Arabic version is used, although on the Blu-ray release its uncensored.

  • Most text is localized.
  • Sara is wearing additional pants to cover up her legs instead of her being pantsless in the original version. This was to avoid sexuality.
  • Sonic, Tails and Knuckles's reactions when Robotnik gropes Sara are cut on Nickelodeon NEE and on The History Channel NEE.

UK censorship[]

Film 4 and ITV2 both use the censored versions, but they brought back the scene where Sara calls Hyper Metal Sonic a pervert. Although, that scene has been censored for the Film 4 version. ITV2 uses the Film 4 version, and includes a heavy edit on the pervert scene.

Film 4[]

  • The scene where Sonic lands on his crotch on the Egg Mobile was cut. (Beacuse it was too painfull, Film 4 also removes Sonic having a hard time)
  • The scene where Sara kicks Metal Sonic and says "No! No! No! No! No! Don't look there you pervert!" it was changed to "No! No! No! No! No! Don't look there you-"
  • The scene where Tails holds Sara's breats and says "I'm so sorry!" was modified for the Film 4 broadcast. In the Film 4 release after the snow effect is gone, it jumps to Knuckles saying "I never you would stoop that low!"

ITV2[]

  • Any scene where someone says "pervert" was muted or cut.

Where to find it uncensored[]

Every other country, the original Japanese version, later UK VHS and DVD releases, and the 2004 DVD release are completely uncensored.

On TV, the syndicated version is the least censored version, however no footage of this version is available online. Some streaming sites may offer the uncensored version.

In Northeastern Europe, the Cartoon Network and Boomerang versions are less censored but the March 29, 2021 Blu-ray HD 4K re-release is uncensored.
