Jackie is a 2016 biographical film distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures starring Natalie Portman in the title role. Whenever BBC One shows the film in the UK, most inappropriate content is cut to tone it down from it's initial "15" rating, to a "12" (one rerun even rated it "PG", although it was probably aired at an earlier timeslot), even when it was initially premiered on the channel on September 26, 2017 at 7pm.
United Kingdom Censorship
- The scene that shows President Kennedy being assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald was modified for the BBC One broadcast. In the BBC One version the blood was digitally removed from Natalie Portman's character's face.
- Swearing is also dubbed over by much lighter words, although some swears are left uncensored to give it a "12" rating.
- Anything that alludes to sexuality, drugs and alcoholism, smoking etc. is also cut. Speaking of smoking, any scene where Natalie Portman's character smokes are also toned down.
Just like The Greatest Showman (the fight scene is cut but the fire is left uncut and swears are toned down to a "U" rating for a "frightening scene of peril" on BBC One, but shown uncut on BBC Two as "PG" rated for "an intense emotional scene") and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (On BBC One, sexuality and language was toned down to a "PG" rating, but BBC Two shows it uncut rated "15" for "sexual references throughout and mature themes" and aired at an adults only slot), this is inverted for the case of Jackie. The film is shown completely uncensored with a "15" rating for, just simply "graphic violence and cigarette use". It premiered on October 5, 2017 at 10:20pm.
United States Censorship
A subversion: While not a family friendly film per se (it's aimed at adults because of the content), the censors go about editing the film to give it a "TV-PG" rating. It is censored in the same way the aforementioned BBC One censors it. It aired censored for the first time on December 10, 2017 at 6pm.
Where to find it uncensored
The DVD/Blu-Ray is completely uncensored.
