Innocence of Muslims is a controversial 14-minute anti-Islamic short film that was written and produced by Nakoula Basseley Nakoula and uploaded to YouTube on July 2, 2012 under the name Muhammad Movie Trailer.
This was originally perceived as a denigration of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, resulting in demonstrations and violent protests against the video to break out on September 11 in Egypt. It spread to the whole of the Muslim world, resulting in the video being blocked in some countries.
Many countries in the Muslim world blocked access to YouTube in response to the film as long as it is still on YouTube.
The video is blocked in most Muslim-dominant countries due to legal reasons, including Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Libya, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Additionally, the video is blocked in some non-Muslim countries such as India, Russia, and Singapore.
There was even legal action from the Ninth Circuit that resulted in the court case of Garcia v. Google, Inc. on February 26, 2014, when Cindy Lee Garcia sued Google to have the video taken down from YouTube. All copies were taken down by Google, but the original version remained available for watching.
