Buzz Lightyear film banned over kiss
Lightyear is an American animated film produced by Pixar and distributed by Disney. It is a spin-off of the Toy Story films. In North America the film was released in theaters on June 17, 2022. Due to a lesbian scene it was subject to censorship in some countries. The film was deemed unsuitable for public exhibition in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and 11 other countries. While Singapore allowed the film to be released there, it was restricted to 16 years and older for a film ostensibly aimed at children. Despite Russia's law prohibiting homosexual propaganda aimed directly at minors, it was given an age rating of 6+ in that country.
Censorship[]
Malaysian and Middle Eastern censorship[]
The film was banned in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates because of a scene where two women kiss. The film is banned in most Muslim-majority countries where homosexuality is punishable by prison times or even death. Due to Disney's "no censorship" policy it is not available on Disney+ in Middle Eastern countries outside Israel.
According to Malaysia's film censors, the distributor refused to excise the kissing scene between two women. If the scene was cut, it would have been approved for release in Malaysia with a P13 rating. The film was released uncut on Disney+ Hotstar Malaysia with an 18+ rating.
Singaporean censorship[]
While the film was passed, it received an NC16 rating, which means no one younger than 16 is admitted. Sexual behaviour between two women is legal in Singapore but still seen as taboo by the people of Singapore.
