Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is an American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios as the sequel to Doctor Strange. It premiered at the Dolby Theatre on May 2, 2022 and was theatrically released by Disney in North America on May 6. Due to featuring a lesbian character from the comics, the film was deemed unsuitable for public exhibition in Saudi Arabia and several other Middle Eastern countries.
It is the first Marvel Studios production that has a significant horror aspect, a genre that director Sam Raimi specializes in.
Censorship[]
Chinese censorship[]
- The film's theatrical release was blocked in China due a scene which showed a kiosk with the Epoch Times, a far-right newspaper which opposes the Chinese government (due to its connections with Falun Gong, a religious organization persecuted by the Chinese government).[1]
Middle Eastern censorship[]
- The film was banned in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, and Qatar because it features a lesbian character from the comics (America Chavez, portrayed by Xochitl Gomez). The Saudi Arabian government had requested removing the scene with the lesbian reference, which Disney declined.[2] However, in the United Arab Emirates, the film passed the censors with a PG-13 rating.
