How Crash Bandicoot Was Changed In Japan

Crash Bandicoot is an American platformer game that was created by Naughty Dog and released for the PlayStation on September 9, 1996. Due to Sony wanting the game to target a younger audience in Japan, some violence was toned down in order to make it appeal to kids and families.

Censorship[]

Japanese censorship[]

  • The Crash Bandicoot character was redesigned to appear cuter and less aggressive in marketing images.
  • At the end of every level in the game, all of the missed treasure boxes would fall on Crash's head in a quick sequence. These scenes were modified for the Japanese release, where only one box would fall on Crash's head.
  • The red crates feature a bomb icon instead of "TNT" to be more intuitively understandable to non-English speakers.

Where to find it uncensored[]

The game is completely uncensored outside of Japan.
